The Shepherds of Faray
Life on a small Orkney Island.
By Kirsty Sinclair.
Large paperback with colour photos throughout.
Description
Lying close to the islands of Westray and Eday, in the Orkney Islands, is the tiny island of Faray, with its small holm. Even though it is small in acres, it is big in personality and has had a fascinating and worthwhile history to record. In the past, a small determined community has occupied the traditional croft houses on the land and fished from its shores. More recently it has played host to seasonal shepherds who manage their flock of sheep on the island pastures and tend to the lambing season. A great part of the year, the island lies peacefully with its flock of sheep and the Orcadian wildlife, with few visitors. There is a new role for the island that could have another impact on its future, we will wait for the next chapter.
