Description

The dialects of Orkney and Shetland are unique – a synthesis of Norse, Scots and Modern English. This dictionary is based on a collection of Orkney dialect words and phrases brought together by the author in the 1980s to which has been added Orkney Norn, the earlier study undertaken by Dr. Hugh Marwick in the 1920s. Marwick gave his attention only to the Norn element of the dialect. The Orkney Wordbook explores in addition the rich legacy of Scots and the peculiar uses of Standard English which are features of today’s dialect.

Following Marwick’s pioneering work, the origin of words and phrases are explained wherever is appropriate. This 4th Edition of the Wordbook, which has been produced due to popular demand, has been revised by the author.
