Description
On Sanday, a small island in Orkney, the collapse of a dry stone dyke becomes the unexpected spark that lights a trail of recovery and learning. The artist Howard Hardiman, still fairly new to the island, forges a deep friendship with Jimmy Walls, an octagenarian dyker, at the local Men’s Shed.
Stories of Jimmy’s trade, starting in the 1950’s, combine with Howard’s drawing and memoirs, mixed with a collection of surprising items found inside the island’s dykes.
A whale skull set on a tidal island; the possibility of the true age of the island’s dykes. This is a book built of care and repair, treasuring every rag stone that sits tight atop a long tradition of labour.
