Description
This is a book for Orcadians and visitors who want to know a little more about Orkney, beyond the obvious notables such as Maeshowe, St Magnus Cathedral and the Italian Chapel. Orkney, Bigger on the Inside is a mélange of stories written by a well-known Orcadian, who lives in Stenness, the parish in which she is proud to have grown up.
Patricia Long introduces us to a little-known Orkney master craftsman in Reynold Eunson, the unique gathering spot for young Orcadians known as the “Golden Slipper”, a remarkable pomp of Orkney professors and the captain of Shackleton’s ship, Endurance, who later went aground in Orkney and visited his fondly remembered mentor in Stromness.
Patricia doesn’t forget her roots and she tells us of her far-travelled Leith and Leask ancestors and, intriguingly, after considerable research, ‘who really discovered Skara Brae’.
And, then there is the compelling title of the book . . . but we will let Patricia tell you about that herself . . .
