Description
The idea of compiling The Orkney Dictionary was hatched in 1992, when an Orkney Language and Culture Group was formed. It comprised local educationists and aimed to promote and develop all aspects of Orkney language and culture in schools. In particular, the Orkney dialect which reflected the history of the community and is an integral part of the day-to-day chat children bring to school.
Gregor Lamb and Margaret Flaws, two local teachers and established authors on dialect matters, were approached to help compile an easily accessible reference book for school pupils, no internet in those days. As the project flourished and expanded, the ‘easily accessible reference book’ became a volume for everyday use by all ages… The Orkney Dictionary.
The Orkney Dictionary is now widely used today and is a bible for those interested in Orkney dialect.
