Six of Orkney’s outer North Isles meet each year to contest a variety of sports. Individuals compete in various athletic events; Junior and Senior teams take part in relay, netball and football competitions; and Seniors struggle for Tug o’ War supremacy. This book describes the circumstances leading up to the first North Isles Sports in 1949, and includes recollections of some of the earliest competitors as well as newspaper accounts of the games up to the 75th anniversary in 2024. It also contains comprehensive winners lists for each year, and a Hall of Fame for the most outstanding champions.
Roderick Thorne represented his school, universities and the Achilles Club in high and low hurdles and triple jump events 60 years ago, and athletics remains a keen interest. He has lived in Sanday for over 40 years and has rarely missed an opportunity to watch the North Isles Sports, and enjoy the hospitality provided by the host islands.
